Mission Accomplished Montañuela 2007

Posted in Mission Trips

Mission accomplished in Montañuela! The missions have taken trips to Montanuela over the last several years. It was decided that as a mission, we will not return to Montañuela for additional building. The city seems to be back on its feet and thriving.   Read a caption from Doug Overstreet about the most recent visit: Pastor Merlo and I took a tour of Montanuela by car. We saw several of the people and children in the community. As we drove through the street, we noticed many cars in driveways. We also saw many homes that were built by missions being added on to. We saw a member of the church working on the church driveway. Men were working in the tilapia ponds. Driving through the town, we saw it as a thriving and normal town in Honduras. Thanks to the Missionaries and the blessings that God has sent to Montanuela, the community is one of the wealthier communities in the area. Pastor Romero, Pastor Merlo and I think that the time has come to let Montanuela stand on its own. I know that it will be hard to leave Montanuela. We have a group of people we have grown to love and have enjoyed working with them and building...

The small village of Montanuela was impacted by vigorous flooding and was nearly leveled by the flow of the water from the hurricane. Almost all of the homes in this village were destroyed and there was minimal work because the land used for agriculture was also also destroyed. Over the last several years, these things have been added to the town: -A new clinic with bathroom -Separate public bathrooms -Many homes -Health care -Donations of clothing, personal hygiene products, school supplies, toys, shoes, school scholarships & more  ...

My experience with Hearts for Honduras was so memorable and rewarding! I had the opportunity to connect with and get to know many of the people, and they truly touched my life. One of the most astonishing moments was when three little children, siblings aged 10, 8 and 4, walked into the medical clinic without any adults. The two older children were so mature and courageous- they had come to town, an hour down the mountain, with their sick little sister. Their mother had passed away and their father worked non-stop- he was not around to care for the children- so the older children were the caregivers to the younger. The 4-year-old had an ear infection, so we prepared medicine and gave it to the older siblings with directions on how to use it. It was incredible to see how responsible these children were, and how much they all cared for one another. It really made me appreciate the loyalty and love within a family. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to serve with Hearts for Honduras, and I cannot wait to take part in future medical missions!  – Colleen...

Hearts for Honduras is a source of inspiration.  – Raquel...

My first trip to Honduras was life changing in several ways. Here’s one! I’ve always believed and understood that God loves the whole world and is present everywhere…but… I think I probably thought that God was basically headquartered wherever I was! (that probably meant he wore a Nebraska sweatshirt; had a rural background and wondered about everyone else. I was in worship on Sunday morning in San Pedro sitting with passionately, enthusiastic Hondurans. I had an English translation feeding into my ear. Alex Merlo was relating a news story he watched of two Mexicans drowning in a river while an Anglo smiled and let them drown. In any other context I probably would not have comprehended. There, at that moment I realized that God was present here too! Jesus was here! He loved my Honduran friends like he loved me. Not me first…them second. But loves us all “first” … no headquarters where I was at.  -Joe...
